My Dog Thinks He’s the Boss, My Cat Knows She Is

Living with both a dog and a cat is like sharing a house with an overly enthusiastic intern and an unbothered CEO. My dog walks around like he owns the place—tail high, chest out, barking orders (literally) at every squirrel, leaf, or suspicious breeze. He thinks he’s in charge, the protector, the provider… of slobber and chewed-up tennis balls.

But the real boss? The cat. Always the cat.

She doesn’t raise her voice. She doesn’t chase anything unless she chooses to. She rules through sheer presence, a withering stare, and an uncanny ability to appear in doorways at just the right time to unsettle everyone. She’s silent, strategic, and somehow always sitting in exactly the spot the dog was about to nap in. Coincidence? She doesn’t believe in those.

The dog, bless him, still tries to assert dominance with the enthusiasm of someone who has never once read the room. He prances around with toys, barks at birds like it’s a full-time job, and proudly herds the cat—who tolerates it like a queen nodding politely at a jester before kicking him off the throne.

Despite the power struggle, there’s an unspoken truce between them. Chaos, sure. But a cozy kind. The kind where they chase each other at 2 a.m. like caffeinated toddlers and then nap side by side like nothing happened.

It’s not peace. It’s not war. It’s pet politics.

And while my dog dreams of being in charge, deep down we all know—especially him—that the cat signs the executive orders.
